MUMBAI — The bank account of an Indian flower vendor's wife in the southwestern state of Karnataka was frozen after US$4.2 million were found deposited in her account by an unknown person, said a media report on Wednesday.

The 32-year old flower vendor said the account used to have less than US$1 in her account. He realized this bonanza when bank officials came knocking at his door in the first week of December, who were seeking an explanation about the source of the funds, according to the Hindu newspaper report.

The flower vendor from Channapatna, 62-km South West of Bengaluru, had received a call from an unidentified online platform saying that he was the one who had deposited the money and sought half the amount deposited in return.

Karnataka state police suspect that the account has been misused by online fraudsters and are probing the matter to ascertain the identity of the person who deposited the amount.

The flower vendor was in need of US$2,800 for ear surgery and had been running from one government agency to another to revoke his wife's frozen bank account.
